A terrific account of a very often overlooked Civil War battle. Quite detailed but still manages to be a good read.

I tend to admire the work that goes into forging a screen adaptation from a book. In this case Goldsman has created a truly compelling script which, as we all know, won the academy award. Worth reading? (in addition to seeing the movie?) Yes. Because you will see so much more. The movie is the product; this is the raw material that gets worked. You'll gather what was specified and what was originated by the actors, how much the scenes were designed and envisioned beyond just the words. In a way it is thrilling to read a screenplay, enabling you to go behind the polished fantasy of film, back to ideas and possibilities.Another discovery is the screenplay's direct or economical way of conveying such complex emotions as those of Nash and Alicia in very few words, and with these words the actors generate their own filmic magic. It is a treat to have the script in hand like this.

I have always been facinated with Howard Hughes the entrepeneur, the visionaire, the inventor. After reading this book, I am more impressed with his charitable nature and his simple, uncomplicated caring for the rest of his fellow humans. What an incredible man!!

This delightful book investigates the cat, its relationship with man and the development of the specialised breeds found today. It provides a practical guide to the care of one's pet while making entertaining excursions into the lives of famous cats of fact and fiction by using quotes from prose and poetry and showing cats in works of art. The book in fact opens with the poem My Cat Jeoffry by Christopher Smart and includes quotes from Chaucer and John Skelton. Cats feature in the works of famous artist like Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Dürer, Tintoretto, Ghirlandaio, Hieronymus Bosch, Brueghel and many others. In a way, the text serves also as a bibliography of works dedicated to cats, or in which they are mentioned, by people like Mark Twain, Doris Lessing, Tenessee Williams, Truman Capote and many others. There is even a chapter on Cats in the East. The character of the cat is described and compared with other animals, and its early history traced from the first appearance of the species, through the ancient Egyptian reverence for sacred cats to its association with magic and witchcraft in the middle ages. The enthusiasm and love of cats expressed by great figures in history make delightful reading. The different breeds that now exist are considered in turn and rare types like the Tibetan, Paraguyan, Kimona, Malay, Oriental, Bobtail and Korat are described. The author also provides practical advice on choosing the right cat and caring for it from kittenhood through all the phases of its life. With more than 200 pictures in black & white (including pics of Henri Matisse, Robert Graves & Ernest Hemingway with their cats) - plus over 40 more in full color - an intoxicating gallery of cats and kittens is provided. This is a classic book and a must-have for all people who are owned by or love cats.

This book is so adorable. I have a 2 year old who loves to touch and feel everything in the book and the fact that it's a board book keeps the wear and tear down to a minimum. I'd recommend it for very young children of ALL religious faiths. The message is very simple and positive.

Howard Harrod's Becoming and Remaining a People: Native American Religions on the Northern Plains argues that the changing of rituals and other aspects of religious practice played a pivotal role in the transformation of the formerly agricultural culture of the Northern Plains into a buffalo culture.

Harrod agrees that the white person's contact with the Native American's had a substantial impact on Native society. He is contending that an exclusive emphasis on contact with the whites can obscure the actions of the Native. Native Americans were not passive spectators to the influx of Europeans; in fact, the Natives actively responded to their changing circumstances ritually as well as politically. This means, that their religious system underwent change that in turn impacted the social structures of Northern Plain culture.

This active change on the part of the Northern Indians is a point of incredible importance. Harrod notes that many of the religious innovations were not seen as a break with tradition. Instead, they were perceived as a development of already existing religious and cultural practices and, thus, continuous with the Northern Plain Native American's social existence. Specifically, these changes could be legitimized by the peoples' visions and dreams. Harrod argues, moreover, that these changes are a testimony to the sheer capability of the Native Americans.

Psychologically informed, but with no psychobabble -- respectful of James, and of other members of that famous family -- but not uncritical. This is a terrific biography, which deserves many readers.
